SEO should be a core part of every migration plan, not an afterthought.

From redirect mapping to post-launch monitoring, every decision impacts how quickly search engines understand your new site and how well your rankings recover.

While we’re not SEO specialists, we’ve worked alongside SEO partners on many successful Shopify migrations. To help plan yours, Tom Ghandi, Founding Partner of Pion333rs, has shared 6 key SEO best practices in our latest Quickfire Migration Playbook to safeguard your organic performance and set up long-term growth.

1. Map redirects before you go live

Every existing URL should be mapped to its equivalent URL on your new Shopify store. A comprehensive redirect strategy helps preserve rankings, protect organic traffic, and ensure customers reach the right pages after launch. As a general rule, the less you change during the migration, the better.

Before going live, test your redirect list by importing it into Shopify and using, by recommendation of Tom Ghandi, Screaming Frog to crawl your myshopify.com URL domain. This allows you to validate that redirects resolve correctly before customers and search engines access the new site.

2. Audit technical SEO before launch

Run thorough technical SEO audits across both the staging and live Shopify sites to identify and resolve technical issues before launch. Once it’s live it’s a lot harder to fix

Aim to keep the migration as consistent as possible. Preserving internal links, page structure and key content helps search engines understand the transition more quickly and reduces the risk of temporary traffic loss.

3. Optimise and consolidate content

A migration is the perfect opportunity to review your existing content. Remove outdated or low-performing pages, consolidate overlapping content, and eliminate unnecessary categories to create a cleaner, better-structured website.

If you’ve significantly reduced the number of pages, expect to see a temporary drop in rankings and impressions. This is normal. If page consolidation has been planned correctly, it shouldn’t have a negative commercial impact, and your website will benefit from a stronger long-term content strategy.

4. Keyword tracking and performance monitoring

Before launch, benchmark your most valuable keywords so you can monitor performance as soon as the migration is complete. Post-launch, monitor performance regularly to identify and resolve any issues as quickly as possible:

  • Benchmark your key rankings from page 1 so you can daily rank-check post-live on the URL exchange.
  • Review key performance metrics weekly, including organic sessions and revenue, to identify trends and areas that may require attention.
  • Monitor Google’s indexation by comparing how many of your old URLs remain indexed against your new URLs. This is a useful indicator of how quickly Google is processing your migration.
  • Keep an eye on 404 errors in Google Analytics (Reports > Engagement > Pages & Screens). Search 404 page titles (for example, “Page Not Found”) to identify broken links or missing redirects that need fixing.
5. Minimise unnecessary redirects

Removing redundant or outdated pages before migration reduces the number of redirects your website needs to process, helping improve efficiency and site performance.

This is particularly valuable when migrating from platforms such as Magento or BigCommerce, where parameter-generated URLs can result in thousands of unnecessary pages that add complexity to the migration.

6. Plan for post-migration SEO growth

Migration shouldn’t be viewed as the finish line – it’s the foundation for future growth.

Once your Shopify store is live and performance has stabilised, focus on continuous SEO improvements. Ongoing technical optimisation, content development and performance monitoring will help you maximise the benefits of a faster, cleaner and more scalable platform.

Conclusion

While protecting your existing SEO should be a priority, a well-planned migration also gives you the chance to improve site performance, streamline your content, and create a better experience for both users and search engines.
